Staff Correspondent: “Golda Conference 2023” was held for the first time in Dhaka. The main theme of the conference was ‘Building the Future: Applying Biotechnology in Golda Farming’.The conference was held on Tuesday (June 20) at Lakeshore Hotel in the capital. Various fisheries experts, nutritionists, feed millers, researchers and entrepreneurs involved in Golda Shrimp farming participated in it. Agro Solution and Maverick Innovation jointly organized the conference.
Mr. Kh. Mahbubul Haque, Director General of Fisheries was present there as the chief guest. Dr. Albert Tacon, AquaHana and Mr. Giva Kuppusamy (GK AQUA SDN BHD) were also present as special guests.
Mr. Aung Tun Aye, Chief Executive Officer of Agro Solution gave a welcome speech at the event. He expressed sincere thanks and gratitude to the guests who came to the conference.
Chief guest of the program and DoF DG Mr. Kh. Mahbubul Haque said, Fresh water giant golda shrimp is also a pride for the country. But what is happening now, if we back to 2010 then about 2 hundred shrimp hatcheries were producing good quality Golda seed or PL. But now only the government’s farms are trying on it. after some year they become very successful. Most of the cases failed and we have received some support from the experts of FAO. They also failed to identify the problem.
“Our farmers are really trying to do something and we are supporting under some business support. So, this is a latest time to start again Golda farming with all efforts. Because, you know we have to compete with other countries. And farmers need to be benefited from this. Otherwise they seem farmers are not benefited, then whole industry will be ruined” -he added.
About the conference and the organizers, DG Fisheries said, this is a platform where industry’s people backwards support people are here, who are really working for agriculture, fisheries, livestock and crops. And I will say this is the first time in agricultural sector for researched that supporting really industrial aquaculture.
BSMRAU Professor Dr. Amzad Hossain presented a report entitled ‘Current Status of Freshwater Prawn Farming in Bangladesh – Issues and Challenges ‘ at the conference.
Mr. Shohel Ibne Sattar, CEO, AQUA-GEN presented a paper entitled ‘Why all-male Golda farming? A hatchery owners’ perspective’ at the conference. One of the fears that many people in our country have about Golda is that it is not possible in this country. But if we can improve its breed through advanced research and gene technology, then it is a huge potential sector for Bangladesh. We (AQUA-GEN) have recently supplied around 4 million PL from our hatchery to various parts of the country and the hopeful news is that, no mortality has come to us at the farming stage.
Dr. Albert Tacon presented a report entitled ‘Global Aquaculture, The Vannamei Paradox and Moving to Freshwater’ at the conference. Dr. Albert answered various technical questions on the occasion. At the end of the presentation, he also gave fluent answers to various questions of the guests in the open question and answer session.
Mr. Giva Kuppusamy presented a report entitled ‘Biotechnology in Golda – All-Male Population and Beyond‘ by joining the program virtually from Malaysia.
Ms. Kakolee Mohanto Keya from Agro Solution discussed on ‘Smart Solution of Golda Farming’ at the conference.
Dr. M A Kabir Chowdhury, Sales Director of Jefo Nutrition Inc., Canada and Founder, Maverick Innovation, Bangladesh gave the closing remarks on the occasion. Before this he briefly discussed about fish nutrition, hormones, food and micronutrients.
Dr. Forruq Rumi played the role of host in the entire program.
