International Desk: The International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) has named Martina Graf, an agrologist and copywriter based in British Columbia, Canada, the organization’s new Global Manager. Graf will transition to her new role with the help of long-time Global Manager Hugh Maynard of Quebec, Canada, who is retiring.
“Martina’s experience in our industry, her capabilities as a project manager, her language skills, and her professionalism helped her stand out among an excellent group of talented candidates from around the world,” said Lena Johansson, IFAJ president, who noted that the Swiss-born Graf can speak with IFAJ members in English, German, Spanish and French. “We are confident she will be an excellent partner as IFAJ continues to grow, serve journalists and communicators in more than 60 countries, and represent our profession on a global stage.”
IFAJ and its member guilds create opportunities for members to report on agriculture worldwide, engage in professional development and networking, recognize excellence in reporting, advocate for press freedom, and share insights on reporting and communications. It is the only global association dedicated specifically to agricultural journalism.
Graf holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland and certificates from institutions in Germany, Spain and Canada. She ran the European branch of a global youth organization affiliated with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization; worked with farmers in Switzerland, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Serbia and Slovakia; co-founded a Swiss-based agricultural communications firm and operates a small farm and agritourism business in rural Canada. Graf is also a strong believer in professional associations.
“Having worked in the agricultural sector for more than 20 years, I’ve learned and experienced the importance of vibrant professional networks like IFAJ,” she said. “They play a vital role in providing a voice, input and support to their members. I look forward to being deeply involved in all of the network’s activities, jointly shaping its future and contributing to IFAJ’s success.”
Johansson took an opportunity not only to welcome Graf to the role, but also to thank Maynard.
“Hugh Maynard and his staff at Qu’anglo have guided IFAJ with skill, commitment and dedication since 2015, sharing long hours and deep knowledge to help us grow,” she said. “We are grateful for the wise counsel and deep commitment they have given us, and we wish Hugh a happy and healthy retirement as we welcome Martina.”
